The Barnes Family :: and the Barnes Family Farm

I’ve taken pictures in many a different place.. on many farms in Virginia.. in a field with a couple of Oxen.. in barns in Tennessee.. golf courses… wineries… homes large and small.. parks.. beaches.. plantations..

I’ve encountered Copperhead snakes.. enormous spiders.. alligators.. mean toddlers..

never in my life have I been more on edge than at the beginning of this session with the wonderful Barnes family..

ya see.. I met Heather a little over a week before our session when I drove out to their property to see the land and get some ideas for our session.. instantly loved Heather and Sadie-Anne. The boys hung back at the house while we took off in Chris’ truck.. we got it stuck only once and Heather expertly got it unstuck and almost didn’t get the truck dirty at all.. (lies).. As we were driving she’s telling me little stories.. i mean.. really we hit it off and it was like hanging out with a friend and her kid.. but the stories.. MY GOODNESS this family has some great stories.. great.. ya know in a jaw dropping “NO WAY” kinda way.. and I only spent an hour or so with them..

the ONE story that stuck with me was that Chris had been recently bitten by a rattlesnake.. I told Miss Sadie-Anne that hence-forth we would not mention rattlesnakes anymore or I was OUT.. well, then she mentions something about alligators.. and Heather dismisses it with “oh.. but that’s down the creek”.. sure.. ok.. sure..

So the day of the session came.. The family was ready.. I was greeted by their oldest, Christopher – incredibly polite and kind.. We were all ready and we jumped in the trucks.. Dog and all!

Our first spot was deep in the woods.. A spot Chris had in mind..

okay.. isn’t this just a magical spot?

do you see the creek to the right?.. yeah.. we all climbed over it.. them in their nice dress shoes, me in the most wonderful boots ever..

we grabbed the pup for a few shots.. the whole woods part of the session was really unique.. I’ve never shot anywhere like this before.. cypress stumps trying to trip me every step.. didn’t phase this crew..

On the way out to the – well, it was kind of a forest.. on the way out there, Chris slows down and points to the spot in the ditch where the second largest RATTLESNAKE he’d encountered was found.. I realize quickly I had not gone over the ground rules with Chris… No mentioning Rattlesnakes, Alligators or any other animal I am not properly dressed to defend myself against..

THANKFULLY, Chris jokingly offered to let me wear his size 12 boots.. they went up to my knees.. y’all, I took my tiny cute boots off immediately.. I wore his boots ALL night.. and.. am totally going to buy a pair..

I took a few pics of the kids.. before we headed back over the creek..

honestly.. the kids are amazingly polite..

Mr. Christopher.. I had a quick second to discuss school with him.. it’s going to be cool to see where he ends up.. I’m personally hoping to be able to see him in a Georgia hat someday..

serious and handsome.. quiet spoken, but conversational.. a great role model for his younger brother and sister.

I grabbed Colby next.. He has this little smile that is kinda always there.. like he’s always up to something.. maybe I’m wrong..

oh.. and then I got this little one of the three of them.. i had to tell Colby – no smile.. Christopher and Sadie-Anne had it down immediately..

and then got I took a few with Sadie-Anne.. oh.. she’s just great..

she is tough and can handle herself.. but still, you can tell she enjoys being the only girl.. she is an absolute joy to talk to.. she thinks about what you are asking – not like a normal 9 year old.. much more like an old friend..

back over the creek, we stopped for a few pictures… the poor kids were DONE by this point!

but I wasn’t done!

when i saw the farm the week before, there were these pretty open green fields.. of cabbage or cauliflower.. on the way to the woods.. anyway IT WAS GREEN and low and I wanted to take pictures in it… but NO.. life on the farm does not wait for pictures.. and wouldn’t you know.. it was DIRT with corn planted.. I kind of mentioned it to Chris and we were totally on the same page and we headed out to the fields..

I’m so glad we did.. it’s almost like we had two photo sessions.. the locations are SO COMPLETELY different..

the picture below is in a field of cauliflower.. literally as far as the eye can see..

i love this one of just Sadie-Anne..

and then the whole fam squished for a few pics.. it was LATE by this point!

and getting a bit chilly.. so i’m so glad they stuck it out with me..

a last one of the whole crew! the sun was setting.. the sky was so pink

we then headed over to this little field (an acre and a half if I remember correctly) that Chris had planted with Brussels Sprouts
for his girls.. because they like them.. Okay.. I love the little things.. and this was just so dang sweet… the girls were super happy to see little brussels growing – Sadie-Anne pulled a couple off and we snacked a bit..

and of course, I had my camera out with me..

after we were done there, they took me to see where the cabbage and cauliflower were kept and gave us a huge box of each.. we have been eating every type of cauliflower and cabbage I could think of!

We got a picture of me with Miss Sadie-Anne – please do note my – errr.. um.. Chris’ boots..

i really had THE best time…

it .. was.. COLD in there!!! but amazing to see and hear and really try to get an idea of the whole process.. i really could spend a whole morning documenting their operation.. it really amazes me to see the people and the hard work that go in to what feeds us all.. (photo credit to Chris)

I hope you love the peek.. I know I talked a lot! both during the session and the post – thanks for trusting me to hang out with your family for the night!! I have many more to finish editing!

My kid probably won’t get in to an Ivy League.. but dang it, she will have earned her accomplishments in life :: northeast florida photographer trying to raise decent kids

today’s Celebrity College Cheating scandal made my jaw drop.. As a Parent.. sure.. i want my kid to accomplish things.. but what the heck?? this is more than just cheating..

my Abby… she’s in 7th Grade.. she’s always been a great student… if she’s struggling with something, she studies – HARD.. I’ve never been a parent who demands All A’s, but if you get a C, you better have worked your butt off for that C..

Abby’s never even had a B..

THIS YEAR… her Algebra class… I met Mr. Floyd (name changed to not completely badmouth the man).. nice enough.. seemed super excited to teach.. she was SAILING through it.. I remember her older brother struggling a bit with it at times.. Abby not even a question on homework.. heck.. she never HAD homework.. she had a 99 in the class.. she said to me a couple times, she wasn’t sure she was really learning anything.. i laughed it off, “damn.. she IS smart”

well Midterms came.. she came home in TEARS… “mom.. i didn’t know ANYTHING on the midterm”… What? that can’t be… you are probably just worked up about it..

Christmas Break.. came and went.. kids went back to school.. Abby came home “mom… Mr. Floyd.. QUIT…”.. uh.. what?

yep.. Mr. Floyd quit.. why you ask? he wasn’t teaching the kids… sure.. some basic things.. but not what they were SUPPOSED to be learning for the standards in Florida (or I’m sure ANYWHERE).. so.. this midterm was not one of HIS tests, it was the district test.. and all of his students FAILED..

the administration had no way of knowing really until then.. He SAID he was teaching them what all the other Algebras were teaching.. but he wasn’t.. he SAID they were all doing great.. they were not.. they hadn’t really learned ANYTHING..

y’all this was the end of January.. i cried.. when i realized this.. i cried.. for those kids.. these are kids who LOVE MATH … who love to learn.. and HE FAILED THEM.. and then QUIT!.. he didn’t have the decency to say “i’m sorry.. let’s get through this”.. months with these kids.. LYING to them.. to the administration..

so.. abby – and all the classes he taught are having to work their tails off.. they had never even been given a syllabus.. or an outline.. or homework..

it has been a STRUGGLE.. FIVE MONTHS of learning Algebra to catch up on!!! The Math department has really come together to support these kids.. Abby is putting in HOURS of work..

this is the note my daughter wrote to the AMAZING substitute she’s had since January.. Mrs. P’s last day was yesterday..

my kid.. thanking someone for making her work her tail off to EARN her grade..

and she has a freaking B.. that she has worked for.. and she’s so proud of it.. and.. i didn’t fix it for her.. she DID it..

she has EARNED that B and has probably learned more life lessons this year than I will realize..

Bless all you teachers who try to teach our kids respect, kindness, ethics, integrity… and I’ll say a little prayer for all of the parents working against you.

babykid drama :: Dr. Seuss Day and nothing to wear..

our babykid, Millie… y’all ..

well.. she woke up this morning.. after just a minute and starting wailing.. crying..

this is not unusual.. I said.. “what’s up, Mil?”

“it is Dr. Seuss Day!!!!” i know this because i have two packages of thinly sliced ham in the refrigerator to go with the green food coloring and eggs other moms are sending in.. damn not getting the “napkins and plates” in time!!… so I say.. “yeup! your ham is in the refrigerator, we are set!”

“noooooo.. i don’t have ANYTHING Dr. Seuss… no Cat in the Hat shirts… no Thing 1 shirts, no blue fish.. NO SNEETCHES”…

never with my other kids would I have said, “hey.. it’s okay.. we can make one”..

what the hell? why.. ? so.. at 6:50AM I sat down and we found png files of Sneetches.. YESSSSSS!!!!

more tears.. “see… the star.. ?? well…. I wanted a pink STAR.. i’ve always wanted it to be a PINK STAR”…

look.. we JUST JUST two minutes before thought of this idea.. but… suddenly.. it’s been her entire life desire to have a tshirt with a Sneetch with a PINK STAR UPON THARS…..

so… i… changed the freaking star..

and she’s one happy babykid..

good LORD help me.. this kid.. she has my number

but doesn’t she look so super cute in her Pink Star Sneetch Tshirt?
