baby Amelia is FOUR weeks today… she is completely asleep.. i should be.. i will be shortly..

this weekend I wanted to attempt family pictures.. nothing special, just all six of us…. well.. they didn’t turn out… because – well, I am in them.. i should have had a drink first.. to relax a bit.. so dang stressful… and I’m the one who makes it that way.. i totally don’t do this with the families I photograph.. but NOOOOOOO.. i become a horrible tense mom.. AND i forgot to check and make sure of one very simple thing – to make sure TOM is taller than me in the pictures.. it’s a very simple thing – he should be higher than me – he is in real life!  but he was sinking down a bit and I was sitting WAY high.. they look stupid.. i look stupid.. Amazon woman stupid…

and no.. i will not share one right now.. if i get one that IS good this weekend, then i will share and you can see what i mean..

BUT … i DID get some great images of the kids.. and one great one of emily and tom…

Emily thinks she has a unique talent.. she can spread her toes apart – far.. someone once commented on this and it has been a “must show” ever since.. she was showing tom as I was making sure the light would work in our room… i love the outtake..

a few of the kids..  and Amelia

please note emily’s spider earrings.. and dirty feet bottoms..

real life y’all… it’s all about real

and abby – this is so perfectly abby.. she adores the baby

and the cooper.. Amelia looks a lot like he did as a baby…  chubby..

and all four… daddy is a complete distraction

but i love that image.. the expression on Cooper’s face is perfect..

and of course.. one for me.. i love this

Amelia Jane Goodnight :: at eight wee days old

Sticking to her older siblings style, Amelia decided not to arrive early.  We checked in for the c-section at 5:30 on March 25th.  There were a few complications – all with me during the surgery.  Amelia came out needing a little oxygen and that’s all.  She weighed 8 pounds and 11 ounces.. 18 1/2 inches long.. short and chunky..

she is an amazingly calm and easy little girl.. I’ll share more later..  iphone snapshots of the babe and her siblings and how life and recovery has been since Amelia’s arrival..

for now, a quick post of images I took when she was 8 days old.. i knew the “session” the hospital photographer did was not going to be what i wanted (oh.. yes, i WILL share those too), so i really pushed things and finally, I had a few bits of energy and decided to try a few pictures…  keep in mind, i’ve had my 4th c-section with some semi-major complications, so I was really unable to move Amelia around much, or heck, move myself around much.. or bend at my waist or do much of anything except this very minimal shot.. i love the way they turned out..

she has more hair than any of the kids..

some teeny feet…

a little bit closer

cooper kept an eye on both of us.. making sure we were okay..

she really is just so sweet..  we are so thrilled that she is finally here and healthy… the kids are a HUGE help.. as is Tom’s mom who is helping keep the house running, and big kids moving..

that’s all for now..

They danced their shoes off – destroyed their socks and tights and spilled pink punch all down their dresses.  Successful date night! ..

taking pictures inside – in the dark with excited fast moving kids – not easy.. apologies for the bad pics..

when Cooper was on the way we moved when from South Carolina to Oklahoma when I was 33 weeks pregnant.. YEAH..  we also had TWO mortgages, and not a lot of extra cash – he had a super cute room… when abby was born, we JUST sold the South Carolina house and were beginning to recover from going through a ton of savings.. so – we didn’t have a lot of cash to make a nursery as i really wanted to.. when Emily was on the way – she had a cute space, but it really wasn’t her own.. they all had lovely little nurseries, but not like I really wanted.. an ugly glider…  pre-made bedding – cute, but not exactly what I wanted.. not exactly.. a bit matchy matchy

when we decided to try for another babe and were fortunate to have a healthy babe on the way –  I wanted a cozy relaxing space… i really wanted a space that I would be comfortable spending time – rocking, relaxing.. just being with the baby… and not feel “ugh, go to sleep baby so I can go… ”  .. so… off to Pinterest I went to find some type of inspiration.. I fell in love with a wall with a cool pattern on it.. and after the girls stripy paint job that Tom did flawlessly, I thought he needed a bit more of a challenge.. he he.. he shook his head at me.. a lot.. we went with the same (left over grays) we did in the girls room..

(most iphone pics.. some better than others..)

first.. patching, prepping.. with lots of help..

then the base coat for the pattern and the color for the 3 solid walls. please keep in mind – i have foggy – not accurate pregnant brain… and well, we had a few hiccups through this..

the first hiccup being.. um.. “I um.. had meant that um.. the solid walls should be the dark color.. “… tom just looked at me.. said, “yeah, i think that will be too dark”.. I had to advocate for the darker.. i wanted cozy.. restful..

see.. here are the freshly painted basecoat with the light walls.. it’s very – sterile and hospitalllllly.. tom suggested i think about it whilst he taped the pattern…

do i tell him i think the squares are a bit smaller than i want?  he’d already asked me twice to make sure.. but i realized it was a bit smaller than i wanted..  um.. nah.. we will just go with it..

and he sent me to the store to get more of the dark gray to be sure we could cover all three of the other walls.. (perhaps, PERHAPS, he just didn’t want me to change my mind any more.. )

at this point – i was NERVOUS!!

and Emily and I were working on another project..

the light..

so.. the light was one of those purchases I made with out telling tom.. i was not sure how it was going to turn out..

it came unassembled.. with all these spokes and 80 of the white things to clip on..

i enlisted help.

i took it in to tom.. and handed it to him.. he smiled.. and said, “wow.. really??”

but he was won over – it looks so cool.

ultra crappy pic of the finished walls with the happy girls and the light..

So.. i mentioned a couple of hiccups..

I THOUGHT i wanted a white crib to go in the room.. well..

um.. no.. it just was wrong..

totally wrong..

so we got our dark wood crib back out.. the same crib all the kids used.. and it felt right.. tom left BOTH cribs in there for a weekend to let me think about it..

in the meantime, I’d asked Anslee of Sugar & Blue to make the bedding for the nursery.. she sent me to a few websites to find fabrics.. i found some – told her to go with it.. mix it up.. she made the skirt, sheets, blankets, pillows and the birds for the mobile.. and i got some extra fabric to make burp cloths, washcloths, and random other things.. i figured i’d be in crazy nesting mode – i was right!

i was HOPING all would turn out as I pictured.. i don’t love girly girly stuff.. and I was sooo hoping the pattern would be soft, and feminine but not too girly.. i’d only seen it online..

it is perfect.. i just love it.. as usual – Anslee hit exactly what i was hoping for..

here’s the finished room.. i still am on the hunt for an ottoman – but haven’t found the perfect one yet..

the kids have a stash of books and pillows under the crib.. they sit under there and read.. they did it when Emily was a baby too

the simple mobile.. i told Anslee – blobbish birds… they are sooo dang perfect..

I’d thought i was going to put some things on the walls, but i think it would be too busy.. for now..

a view from the chair..

yes, i needed a tv.. i like to watch tv.. when emily was a baby, her room was also the guest room/play room.. so there was a tv in there.. it was wonderful.. i would turn the sound off and when she needed a bit more cuddle time, or was sick.. i was content to just sit and hold her..  I could watch important shows, like the Bachelor..

rest assured, tv for me, not the babe..

i really love how it turned out.. tom worked super hard to get it all done so i wouldn’t go insane..

now.. we just need the babe…

when the news of this pregnancy started to sink in.. and making it past that first trimester before we allowed ourselves to think about moving forward – the prior year’s miscarriage brought a new reality to things.. but after our second ultrasound we felt we were past the most worrisome part… and then.. .. we realized “wow, we are having a baby.. now where will the baby go?”  we love our house.. but it has just four bedrooms and this will be kid #4.. totally not enough for each kid.. not that i think each kid needs a room, but we knew some changes had to occur.. we had two places we could close in and make a fifth bedroom, but we love how open the house is and didn’t really want to do that.. so we decided to have the girls share a room.. a tough sell, considering each girl loved her room and her own space.. the promise of a tacky “dream light” to each sealed the deal.. we also moved Cooper so everyone was displaced and not just Emily.. add another dream light to the promises.. (like $100 by the time we got them – ugh.. why could i not just promise candy).. we didn’t paint or really re-do a lot in cooper’s room.. more on that in another post..

this all started in November.. we pulled everything out of Cooper’s room and the kids closets… EVERYTHING.. pulled out and in to the kids crafting/play area.. if you don’t know me well, let me just tell you.. i do not handle chaos/disorder/clutter well – at all.. in fact.. i get really freaked out and anxious and well, crazy..

here are a few “in process” pictures of the clutter.. left is all the crap out of coops room – yeah.. and the right is all the crap out of the closet and in part of Abby’s room.. i wanted to cry..

I was not allowed downstairs for a little over TWO weeks.. except a quick “is this how you want it?” look..

i could see the clutter from the top of the stairs.. omg.. i mean.. just.. horrible..

that pile was the pile of “stuff” from Cooper’s room that needed to go.. boxes.. cardboard.. the kid is a hoarder.. since we’ve reorganized things and “donated” things he no longer plays with, his room has been so much tidier.. it has been life changing (i really mean this – this was a constant issue for me – the clutter in his room).. we had a lot of furniture to get rid of.. lots of things we just needed to donate..  the kids got $ for the things they got rid of that we put on Craigslist.. Emily made $40!!

clean slate..

OOPS.. see that paint missing – i put some sticky things on the wall.. tore the paint/drywall OFF.. tom was thrilled..

very boring color..  blah.. blah..

so.. you know Pinterest?  well.. i don’t go on Pinterest unless i am working on a project.. because it will suck the time out of your life.. but i needed inspiration for the room.. I wanted the girls room to be both of theirs.. and not pink/purple girly..  i found bedding on Pottery Barn Kids.. and Pottery Barn Teen.. and it had Gray in it..

see..

there was quite a bit of gray on pinterest.. i love gray.. i realize it is not cutting edge and that i’m no doubt quite behind the times, but dammit.. i like it.. and i’ve never been a trend setter.. so.. i found stripes and gray .. and told tom.. and waited for his reaction.. “okay.. you want stripes.. okay – get the stuff”..

so off i went, got paint.. and Frog tape…  and tom sent me upstairs for the rest of November.. (i snuck down with my iphone a few times)

THEN.. the fun part..

we used tom’s old bunk beds for the girls beds.. but they were dark old stained wood.. tom worked on those for a few days..  5 coats of primer/paint

i’m sure at this point the “just buy new beds” he told me twice was screaming in his head.. but man.. i just HATE spending money when we don’t have to!

as soon as that was finished.. the rest of the room came together quickly..

i made new lampshades for the girls… girls made some artwork for the wall.. i ordered pictures/Gallery Wrapped Canvases for the room.. (dressed the kids so it would coordinate with the finished room).. the images are from our Christmas Card pictures..  i even had to do some sewing to make the panel curtain i found work!

here are some finished images.. i really love how it turned out..

(tooth fairy pillows by Anslee at Sugar and Blue – you can find her on Facebook.. here… )

I put a canvas of each girl above their bed.. they love them.. i let them choose which image from the session.. (narrow selection)..

20×20 Gallery Wrapped canvas

i wanted a dresser that the girls could share.. i had a very specific idea..  and something that did not match at all..

and i found this cool piece at The Cottage Collective – find here on Facebook..

it is perfect..

put more pics of the girls on top.. again.. they chose the images..

for us, it works..  and i love it.. and we didn’t spend a ton of money.. the girls love it.. they have plenty of space and all their toys have a place..

i’ll blog specifics of some of the bits later..

seriously – i can not believe that a year has gone by since we started this… so much change.. i sit here, 30+ weeks pregnant..  so many people participated.. stopped.. tried.. followed along.. moved away.. far far away.. i got to know two people really well through this.. Chris and Kelly.. the project was a lot harder than I thought to keep up with.. it seems so simple.. but it isn’t.. i wanted to be more creative.. more artsy..  i wasn’t always.. but that’s okay… the point was to do it.. and we did..

to wrap up the year.. our themes were… 48 Black and White.. 49 Celebrate, a 50 Free Choice.. 51 Change and 52 Candlelight.

BLACK and WHITE

here is mine..

and from Chris S.  hadn’t even thought of just black and white.. IN COLOR..

and from Kelly M. – cool.. cool..

and then the next week was CELEBRATE

my image…

after a day of 5 year old Birthday Celebrating (she actually had 3 full days of celebrating)..

fell asleep in Gramps arms..

i mean.. is that not adorable.. (grainy iphone pic.. but, i’m so glad i got it)

and from Chris S.  - well done.. love the sparkly candle and the action!

next week was FREE CHOICE.  i was exhausted.. company.. birthday celebrations.. Christmas getting ready.. my brain was fried..

this is from a day we got a bit of snow.. the kids played for HOURS.. out there.. hours.. i mean.. they had a blast.. the giggles and the pleas for “hot cocoa outside”.. it was a great day..

and from Kelly M.. her recent vacation… (ugh.. warm.. sun.. beach)

CHANGE was the next theme..

I wish I had a better image for this.. but this week was another really insane week at our place.. company.. Tom’s birthday.. just crazy.. and on top of that.. Emily realized her beloved lady bug, Bella, died.. i think she’d been dead for a while, but Emily noticed her color was gone.. she tried to feed her red foods so she would get her color back.. finally, we had a deep discussion about it.. and oh.. she cried.. and cried.. and was absolutely crushed..

we decided to bury her at Church, in the prayer garden..

to me.. it was a big moment.. she’s not a baby.. i can’t just divert her attention.. she’s a 5 year old really smart little girl..

i had to say the prayer..

emily ended with “she was a good ladybug”

and from Kelly M.. totally thought of doing this myself!

from Chris S… explanation – after 30+ years.. she changed her silver pattern.. soooo pretty!

and last.. was CANDLELIGHT

From Kelly M… super neat…

and from Chris S… from HER bday celebration..

 and there you have it..

52 weeks..

after i have this baby, a glass of wine in celebration!!!

thanks to all who participated – lots or a little.. followed along..

we had two rounds of company… lots of cooking.. lots of hugs, fun, laughter, tears.. decorating – undecorating.. but we made it through.. we had a wonderful time just being… for the first time in years, I was able to actually stop working when i said i was going to and just be part of the family..  just enjoy my kids and tom.. it was lovely..  calm.. relaxed.. if you know me, this is not something that comes naturally..

we’ve been working on the baby’s room.. because um.. well, we hadn’t done ANYTHING to the room since Emily moved in with older sister Abby in November.. the room is now painted.. furniture ordered.. bedding being made.. it will all come together soon enough.. the pregnancy is going well… although, i’ve been told to take it easier as i’m not 30 anymore and my body is not exactly fond of being pregnant..  tom and the kids are taking really good care of me and baby-ing me quite a lot..

as a result of this needing to slow down, I’ve had to cancel the next Workshop at Maize Rec.. i hated to do it, but I just can’t push myself..  I’m so thankful to the people at Maize Rec and those taking the Workshop for being so understanding..

i have a few photography design projects to finish… and some (quite a bit) blog posting to catch up on.. but no sessions/running around until well after the babe gets here…

i didn’t get my good camera out at all over the holidays.. not for Christmas.. not for new years.. nothing..

i did take lots of photos.. just with my iphone… i’ll share more later..

but i hear the oven timer going off – that means emily’s brownies are finished..

so.. you know how you have this *IDEA* of how you want your Christmas Pictures to look..

i’ve had this idea for TWO years.. but last year i was just not feeling it.. and the year before we were in the process of moving..

this year, i knew we were redoing the kids bedrooms and the girls were going to share… i was hoping to not only get good pics for Christmas cards, but also some images for their room… i had a clear idea of the feeling i wanted and the colors i wanted.. and my kids are at a good age to really work with.. i thought i better make this happen while i could..

a few weeks before, i just so happened to see the perfect chairs to replace some ugly chairs for the dining room – and they just so happened to be the perfect color for this.. so I asked Tom to grab a chair.. dressed the kids quickly.. (well, i laid their outfits out and played with combinations for a couple hours).. i didn’t want it Christmassy looking.. just clean.. crisp.. happy.. and I wanted their personalities to shine..

here are a few of my favorites..

some of these made it in the girls room.. i love how we totally captured their relationship

i mean.. everynight.. giggles.. giggles.. some grumpies, but mostly giggles..

and here is a little collage that went in our Christmas Card.. (and i printed it as a Gallery Wrap Canvas.. i love it.. LOVE it.. )

and this is just silly.. but i like it..

isn’t the light just yummy..

sweetness

and one final one.. on our way back out of the trails..

i make them sit here each time we go back and take pics.. just to compare..

they are getting so big..
